Travelling tales with Alec John Williamson

Strathpeffer / Ullapool

Join us on a journey from Strathpeffer to Ullapool, in the company of Alec John Williamson. Last of the grand old-style Highland storytellers, Alec was born in 1932 near Edderton in Ross-shire into a Gaelic-speaking Traveller family. Each spring they took to the road with horse & cart, finding itinerant work in the crofting communities of Wester Ross and Skye where they were well known and welcomed back as bearers of news, traditional skills and entertainment. We will follow one of these routes, stopping near the old campsites to hear about characters met on the road and listen to some of the tales and place-name lore passed on around the campfire.

Minibus departs Strathpeffer 12 noon; meet at the bandstand beside the Pavilion 11.45 (parking available in the Square); bring a packed lunch if wished. Ticket includes refreshment at Ullapool Museum and an informal gathering for a final few stories at the Ceilidh Place between 5-6pm. Minibus departs Ullapool at 6.15pm.
