Groam House – Annual Exhibition: Games & Gatherings
To mark the Year of Homecoming the Groam House annual exhibition, which opened on 1 May, has been dedicated to ‘George Bain – Games & Gatherings’. Whilst Bain (1881 – 1968) was primarily famous as the ‘father of modern Celtic Art’, the exhibition includes a number of drawings of contemporary events. Some of the most interesting and charming of these are his well-observed sketches of the varied activities to be found at Highland Games which form the focus of the new exhibition. Bain, a trained artist, retired from his teaching work in Kirkcaldy, Fife and moved to Drumnadrochit in the heart of the Highlands. He regularly attended the famous Glen Urquhart Highland Gathering and Games. There he used his acute powers of observation and his sketching skills to capture the essence of the various activities, portraying participants and spectators alike with warmth, humour and an impressive economy of line.
