Exhibitions: Leaving Home
Inverness Museum & Art Gallery brings you two fascinating exhibitions featuring the history of the Highlands. “Inverness Ladies in Canada” is a case display containing the amazing story and Victorian costumes of the Fraser family of Inverness. The case tells the dramatic story of the rescue of Mary Donald and her young daughter Heather from the SS Athenia, torpedoed in 1939. The headlines in the Inverness Courier September 1939 read ‘Saved from the Athenia, Dramatic stories by Inverness Ladies’ – they survived eleven hours in an open boat. “Exploration of Emigration and Immigration” is another exciting exhibition with displays from the Highlands during the late 1800s, after the First World War, in the 1960s, and today.
